Vocab Homework

VOCABULARY: “A Christmas Carol”

Use a dictionary to find the definitions for the following vocabulary words. Feel free to cut and paste the definitions from www.dictionary.com. This list of words is located on my e-board to aid you in this assignment. In addition to finding their definitions, please highlight the words in your text. The words are listed in the order in which they appear in the story, and the page number is included for easy reference.

Stave Three: The Second of the Three Spirits

1. Prodigiously (50): extraordinary in size, amount, extent, degree, force, etc

2. Comprehensive (51): of large scope; covering or involving much; inclusive

3. Ruddy (51): of or having a fresh, healthy red color

4. Petrifaction (52): the act or process of petrifying; the state of being petrified.

5. Dogged (52): persistent in effort; stubbornly tenacious

6. Disdain (-ing) (52): to look upon or treat with contempt; despise; scorn.

7. Entreat (-ing) (55): to ask (a person) earnestly; beseech; implore; beg

8. Beseech (-ing) (55): to implore urgently

11. Penitence (63): the state of being penitent; regret for one's wrongdoing or sinning; contrition; repentance.

12. Desolation (67): an act or instance of desolating

13. Affability (69): pleasantly easy to approach and to talk to; friendly; cordial; warmly polite

14. Humbug (69): something intended to delude or deceive

15. Affront (72): a personally offensive act or word; deliberate act or display of disrespect; intentional slight; insult

16. Precept (-s) (75): a commandment or direction given as a rule of action or conduct.

17. Meager (76): deficient in quantity or quality; lacking fullness or richness

18. Refuge (77): shelter or protection from danger, trouble, etc

19. Shroud (-ed) (78): a cloth or sheet in which a corpse is wrapped for burial

20. Stately (78): majestic; imposing in magnificence, elegance, etc

21. Trifled (80): an article or thing of very little value

22. Snuff (80): to draw in through the nose by inhaling

23. Pendulous (80): hanging down loosely

24. Excrescence (80): an abnormal outgrowth, usually harmless, on an animal or vegetable body.

25. Disgorge (-d) (82): to eject or throw out from the throat, mouth, or stomach; vomit forth.

26. Sepulcher (-s) (83): a tomb, grave, or burial place

27. Plunder (85): to rob of goods or valuables by open force, as in war, hostile raids, brigandage, etc

28. Recoil (-ed) (87): to coil again

29. Bereft (87): a pt. and pp

30. Reconcile (-d) (92): to cause (a person) to accept or be resigned to something not desired

31. Inexorable (94): unyielding; unalterable

32. Intercede (-s) (95): to act or interpose in behalf of someone in difficulty or trouble, as by pleading or petition
